Dr. Debbie Ellen is a researcher with an interest in sustainable food production and consumption. She has researched New Smithfield Wholesale Market in East Manchester and its contribution to Manchester's Food Supply (2009) and authored a report on Farmers Markets in Greater Manchester (2009).  In 2010, Debbie scoped the baseline for Sustainable Food Production and Consumption for Manchester: A Certain Future (Manchester's Climate Change Action Plan). She is currently working as an Associate with EMERGE/FareShare North West on an innovative project to address commercial/industrial avoidable food waste on Manchester's New Smithfield Wholesale Market, and as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester, looking at discrimination and prejudice in the professions.  She spent three years working as a Research Fellow at the Open University and has worked at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School’s Centre for Enterprise.  In her free time Debbie grows food on her allotment and her voluntary work includes ongoing development of a community orchard on her allotment site.
